Lovers &#38;amp; Fighters is my vehicle to offer myself as a (friendly) gun for hire for freelance creative advertising and marketing solutions to problems for businesses, brands or initiatives. So that might be strategic and creative thinking, conceptual ideas and executions, or the practicals of copywriting and design. They might be projects, loose short-term relationships that lend themselves to my freelance talent, or repeated working together. And since many of us still WFH after the Covid-era, Lovers &#38;amp; Fighters operates on the local level from my base in Copenhagen, but technically my services could be applied to any brand, client or agency anywhere in the English-speaking world. (I’m working on my Danish...]


















The company name Lovers &#38;amp;
Fighters means that I hold dual values, both equally strong. Lovers means
caring about what I do, both in the principles and the details. Fighters means
standing up for what I believe in, with respect. So with this creative
business, I fight for what I love, lovingly.







I also have a strong social good streak, often self-initiating projects that feed that itch, and I'm particularly committed to climate action, as a founder of XR Families NL, part of the Extinction Rebellion movement, and contributing as part of XR’s Arts Circle and the Creatives For Climate collective. Plus I have volunteer coached the next generation through Project Fearless on a STEAM-based Artivism for Climate Action afterschool course, working to empower girls age 9-14 to find their creative voices on what they love and wish to fight for.

Played ACD/writer for my team at R/GA London.Nike Air Max had lost its connection with the creative youth, who don’t know its story of creativity, innovation and imagination. So with Foot Locker we created tools for them to create their own story through easy access to music. We got 2 top producers to provide the sample loops, Soundtrap by Spotify to provide the platform, and we dropped the teaser social content to get people exploring what fire beats they could cook up and share with the Foot Locker community.

// SNKRS AIR MAX DAY 2022: Give Fresh Air: The Game Show
Played ACD/writer for my team at R/GA London.For Air Max Day, Nike wanted to give Air new meaning - championing change and those who ignite it in our communities by giving back. And SNKRS Live was the perfect place to do that and Give Fresh Air, by getting LDN, AMS, and BER to go head to head and win big for a local cause. Sneakerhead teams from places like Patta, Foot Patrol, Solebox and Overkill took part in 3 hours of live-streamed game show fun, from rounds that tested their sneaker design skills, blind silhouette knowledge, shoe print detective work and more. And we awarded close to USD 100,000 - London’s cause won the big prize, but no-one went home with an L, Amsterdam and Berlin’s causes got given fresh air too.

Out of this, I created an online film campaign that takes the traditional situation of a nightmare and flips it on its head to be the parent having the nightmare, and the child doing the comforting. A united call from families and Unicef to world leaders for change, that was shown at COP26 cementing Unicef's commitment to climate action for every child.

Awarded a Bronze Cyber Lion at Cannes Advertising Festival.


To get Christie’s to stand out from their other auction house competition, it was time to focus on what makes them unique - the people within their walls. Creating an interactive documentary experience, ‘The Art People’ - a microsite lifted the lid on the art world and encouraged a much broader audience to reassess Christie's through short film, cinemagraphic, visual and written essay content.&#38;nbsp;

It was a whole heap of wet 'n' wild fun, thanks to legend of the world wide web and showman, one Colin Furze... Just fantastically sweaty women, united in their powerfulness. All of photographer David Clerihew's amazing, natural post-workout portraits went out on Instagram, and the girls involved all happily shared them with their followers too. I entered this concept for the Festival theme of ‘Disrupt!’ and got to the penultimate round of selection. Impossipool comments on the way gentrification is disrupting the fabric of neighbourhoods, and how this ‘upgrading of the city’ can actually exclude. Embodied in a deliciously attractive disruption to the day to day canal environment that you can’t get into, Impossipool asks if we all have the same rights to the city after all?&#38;nbsp;

Most of us only pick up a racket after Wimbledon (or an even dustier one after the Summer Olympics once every 4 years), our tennis fever inspired by our heroes like Andy Murray. But the truth is that whoever is playing, and whenever, every game's a classic. So this film and its accompanying poster series, created through BBH Sport, aimed to remind us all of that and get more people playing tennis more often.&#38;nbsp;

// THE KILLER ADVANTAGE:&#38;nbsp;The Disability Foundation &#38;amp; James O'Shea
After the warm-up of the 2012 Olympics, to coincide with the 'main course' of the Paralympics, I partnered up again with the wonderful Chris Hyndman to make a mini documentary for the charity TDF. We wanted to celebrate the amazing feats of Paralympic athleticism and how TDF quietly helps to make them happen. Our film featured the double amputee and great GB Gold hope James O'Shea, who swam for 100 breaststroke glory on September 5th, 2012. In his first Paralympics ever he came 4th in the world, a fantastic achievement.

// STATUS OF AFRICA: AMREF
Finalist (Silver) in Digital Communication Awards. Finalist at Campaign BIG Awards.
Commendation at Creative Circle Awards. BBH Black Sheep Silver. 

AMREF wanted to do something disruptive to raise awareness of their work, and as a tiny charity with no money, social media seemed the right way to go, as well as being an excellent platform from which to draw parallels and cold realities of the differences of life in Africa and the more developed world.

Digital Production: FEED.

The 'Status of Africa' Facebook application allowed you to donate your status to one of five real African mothers or midwives, to tell their stories, giving you a revealing and moving window into other lives. Stephen Fry tweeted about the project and it was excellently received by the mummy blogger community, who got behind it passionately to stand up for their African sisters.

Finalist at Campaign Big Awards.


A Pinterest project for a small charity partner AMREF, taking the next step on from our earlier social campaign 'Status of Africa' in disrupting social media for good. We sent an iPhone to Tanzania, to a 13 year old girl called Sihiba Yusufu, who was a mother already at that tender age. As many young girls in Tanzania sadly are; due to custom and a lack of sexual health information - their childhoods quickly taken from them, as they are thrust into an adult world of great responsibility.

Sihiba joined Pinterest to share her life in images, and somewhat upset the status quo of the things being collected there that we think we desperately want and need. The project, although relatively simple in idea, took some time to execute, as it's tough teaching technology to a young girl at distance. Plus for her safety, Sihiba did not have the iPhone with her all the time. 3G internet signal was also only accessible at her local health centre, which she had to walk to, so Sihiba posted in irregular batches, but with Swahili notes which were translated with the help of an AMREF peer.

The idea was to create social value out of a pin, and hopefully also food for thought. People really responded well to it, and over 4 months followed Sihiba's daily life on Pinterest. Stephen Fry tweeted his support, and Mumsnet made it their campaign of the week. The iPhone was then sold to benefit Sihiba further - funding vocational training for her so that as she developed through her teenage years she could look after herself, her baby and even her community in future, an ambition she proudly held.&#38;nbsp;

And started (but not finished) a screenplay. I do rather love words... Here are a few faves from the ongoing journey of my pen:// KLABU : 6 months of Freelance Impact Storytelling[plus content creation, social media and CMS management]I’ve always said I like nothing more than doing good with good people. And KLABU is an amazing NGO and social enterprise, focussed on levelling the playing field for refugees worlwide. Through shipping containers turned open-up-and-play clubhouses with sport lending libraries, they offer the tools to change lives for the better  in refugee camps. And you can support that work of the Foundation through their social enterprise, which sells the bold and bright KLABU shirts worn at the cross-border sports club. 
I penned regular editorial pieces and social posts to bring the KLABU universe and its treasure trove of beautiful, heartwarming and transformational stories to life. Whilst at KLABU I met many refugee newcomers in Amsterdam first hand, hearing about their life experiences, and what matters to them and helps them feel grounded in their new cultures. It inspired me to write a piece for the Food issue of Foyer Magazine, which celebrates and explores untold stories from people of mixed, third culture and second-generation cultural heritage. // “JELLYPIE, FIREFLY” : Co-written Children’s Book[plus Creative Direction, Design &#38;amp; Typography]

Good friend and ex-colleague Anne Graham came to me with a fledgling manuscript draft for this wonderful character full of ‘glow magic’ that represents a useful metaphor for a child with an ADHD diagnosis. We developed the book further together, honing the structure and length, the story arc and the functionality - creating ‘Jellypie, Firefly’ as a series of spreads that spark conversation between child and carer to help them make sense of the letters A, D, H &#38;amp; D and thrive in their neurospicyness. 
We found our illustrator Emma Gandolfi, I wrote all the concept briefs for her spreads and creative directed along the way. I also put together all the Kickstarter material to help get our book fully funded (including voicing the project film), created all the content for the social channels, and also oversaw the printing process for the book, having designed and laid it all out... A labour of love that has me glowing from top to bottom too, just like Jellypie herself! // *PERSONAL* MIDJOURNEY A.I. : &#38;lt;Input&#38;gt;Haiku {Output}: IllustrationLike all good creatives worried they might lose their job to a computer, I had an A.I. mess-around with the MidJourney beta, and I thought I’d challenge my potential robot overlord by feeding it with some shortform haiku poetry I wrote as the input, just to see what it would spit back out. Verdict: it’s too much fun. I’m sure A.I poetry’s probably pretty good too. But for now I’m still the one holding the pen...and doing the input (and the design overlay!)

// GOOGLE x BBC: Child Internet SafetySadly this project died deep into the discussions stage with these 2 iconic brands, and I’ll never fully get why. Meme culture was planned to be put to new, subversive smart-thinking use as a way for kids to communicate better behaviour amongst themselves in their online lives. The message bearers could go where no ad campaign could ever hope to reach. Roll Safe, Danny Dyer, BBC newsreaders, nature documentary sloths; we twisted too many bits of TV and internet culture to share here, but it was a joy to write on.

I’ve also formed a working mothers’ group, and answered umpteen ‘creativity for good’ briefs with the Creatives For Climate collective. You could say I like to put my creativity to active use...// PARO STORE: THE SUSTAINABLE STOP AT MODEFABRIEKI was very drawn to the idea of disrupting the business-as-usual of the Modefabriek, a huge fashion trade show held in July 2022, with Amsterdam sustainable fashion hub owners Ruth Sutherland and Zoe Patience of PARO Store. They were attracted to the original Creatives For Climate database of posters submitted by member creatives, and I created a fashion-specific brief calling for more additions to it (contributing more artworks myself), to help bring protest power to The Sustainable Stop at the centre of Modefabriek and support the emerging brands showing that fashion can be done another way; good design that’s good for the world.

I am one of the founder parents of the Families group within Extinction Rebellion in the Netherlands. When we meet, I get the kids to draw a ‘rebel animal’ incorporating XR’s Extinction Symbol, the hourglass within a circle.&#38;nbsp; They come up with some amazingly creative things, and then I turn them into bilingual posters that call for more families to join the cause and rebel for life. I also contribute a lot of messaging and artwork to the fight for climate action, and take to the streets with it through XR’s working Arts Circle. Every plastic bag takes up to 500 years to decay in landfill, and in the UK alone, 8 billion plastic bags were being thrown away every year in 2007. That’s why we wrote and designed 'I'm Not a Plastic Bag' for Anya Hindmarch to create a bag around. The bag was sold for £5 at 300 Sainsbury’s supermarkets. Then it went global, selling 120,000 bags in four countries in the first hour. Coverage included 60 TV news features globally, 1,200 press articles worldwide and three million search results on Google. A national campaign followed – ‘Plastic Ain’t My Bag’ – with major retailers signing up to say no to automatic distribution of plastic bags. These hit bags of 2007 embodied the moment that people stopped to think whether they really needed another plastic bag.

I was part of a team of women at 72andSunny who got together to create a provocative action for IWD, launching 5 floating breasts onto the Amsterdam canals. was a hands-on art piece I drove at BBH to mark Climate Impacts Day, and the idea of connecting the dots between extreme weather and climate change. Giving everyone a blank dot to fill in, together we created a spreading grid of dots that showed our collective perspective on the issues of climate change and solidarity with those on the front line of it.

I’ve taught light art in schools and ARTivism afterschool, worked with junior talent in all my agency jobs and in the outside world with future generations. And I get a definite warm glow from it.&#38;nbsp;// PROJECT FEARLESS: ARTivism for Climate ActionOf the TEN seasons (and a half if you include a stint co-coaching Sustainable Sewing!) of this afterschool course that I have co-created and co-coached through the non-profit Project Fearless, I’ve loved every minute working to empower girls age 9-14 to find their voices through hands-on art and science activities around climate change topics. Teaching the next gen creative rebellious skills makes me very happy and hopeful all at the same time.
- SEASON X: ‘Trash to Treasure’ with Stryker - Spring ‘25The ARTivism dream team of Cathy Sorbara and Lieneke Leep and myself rounded up 5 years and 10 seasons of ARTivism in true style, with a LOT of recycled materials and a lot of kid creativity, making a wearableTrash Suit, our own recycled paper, e-waste treasures and food waste candles among many eye-watering learnings on our wasteful world.

Collaborating with mindfulness therapist Sanne Buis of Mind For Good, we took a tour through our own emotions and expressed each one artistically, to get a handle on what makes us tick and channelling that as ARTivists into creative expression - what we truly want to say to the world. - SEASON VIII: ‘Innovation For Good’ with Stryker - Spring ‘24
Partnering with medical technology company Stryker and their Women’s Network, we unlocked the innovation mindset in our girls, looking for ways to change the environments and communities they live in meaningfully. And a creative spark that never settles for status quo, things can always be different, better, brilliant...
- SEASON VII: ‘Life Reimagined’ with Lynk &#38;amp; Co - Autum ‘23Partnering with Lynk &#38;amp; Co, the sharing economy car pioneers, we explored what our worlds might look like in future and what we might not need to own but could share. From multi-person doughnut cars to off grid self-sustaining homes, from the circular economy and designing out waste and how to be more discerning and sustainable when we do shop for something, we pulled all our learnings together in a public exhibition in Lynk &#38;amp; Co’s Amsterdam club, peppered amongst their showroom.

- SEASON VI: ‘Fearless Energy’ - Spring ‘23
Learning all about renewable energy became our focus, making solar powered prints, envirobatteries from lemons and potatoes, and we’re immensely proud of the end product screened at our Fearless Energy Festival in July 2023... Check out “Stop Gas With Stop Motion”, a short film hand-crafted by our crew of 12 in support of Gemeente Amsterdam’s energy transition plan to get the city off fossil fuels by 2040.

- SEASON V: ‘Fearless Frames: Visions of a Greener Amsterdam’ with Polaroid - Autumn ‘22

12 Fearless Framers spent a fantastic 8 weeks exploring and expressing their creative visions with the collaboration of Polaroid. And they ended it in fearless style with a presentation of their sustainable visions to members of the Gemeente Amsterdam responsible for the Groenvisie 2050 for the city. &#38;nbsp;Read all about it here!

- SEASON IV : ‘The House of ARTivism’ with VANS - Spring ‘22We wrapped up this season with an Earth Day art exhibition showcasing our girls creative self-expression and what they stand for on the earth they stand on, with the highlight pieces being the creative canvasses (shoes) from VANS that each girl custom designed and painted.
- SEASON III: ‘The Writers Room’ - Winter ‘21
Our fearless team worked together to create of a set of storylines and key visuals for Global Girl, the badass climate action superhero alter ego of the ARTivism course. The goal was for the pitching of a combined animated and behind the scenes climate action series, written and developed with the girls.&#38;nbsp; I eventually managed to pitch this as an RFP to Waterbear - sadly it didn’t come to pass, so any interested production parties out there, do hit me up if you want to talk about it and partner with our Project Fearless creative crew!
 - SEASON II:&#38;nbsp;‘Fearless Schools For Climate’ - Spring ‘21This season ended with the creation of an open-source website and karmic ideas initiative from the brains of 13 fearless girls, to inspire sustainable change in Amsterdam schools and beyond!

- SEASON I:&#38;nbsp; ’Global Girl’&#38;nbsp;For 8 weeks in Autumn 2020 we lived vicariously through the badass gender fluid form of Global Girl.
We made worm hotels, tested the effects of C02, 3-D printed regnerative agriculture lapel pins, veggie-dyed our own scrap fabrics, made a solar panel circularity cape, tiny angry signs and a huge protest banner...to name but a few weeks of fun we had expressing ourselves.

// AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVAL: De NachtloerrrdersAs part of the 72and Sunny Creative Collective, I helped turn hundreds of Amsterdam school children into light artists alongside us, delivering the in-school workshops. Taking the animal eyes drawn from their imaginations, I taught them how to transform them into ‘living, breathing’ animations with the coding platform Scratch. And it was these 800 different eyes that formed the co-created with children artwork, peeking out in the night-time darkness amongst the bushes and trees of Artis Zoo.

Nominated for Campaign BIG Awards 2012.


Keep Aaron Cutting was a project created with BBH Barn, the agency’s creative internship, in response to the London Riots. We wanted to show that youth and social media could do some good, instead of being blamed for the situation at the time. And it worked. I was super proud of mentoring the young team and working together with them in "doing something good, famously" - £35,000 was raised in 72 hours to Keep Aaron Cutting following the disorder in London. 
 
I was also very proud and touched to meet and interview the man himself, and of the fact that he remained in the shop 6 days a week cutting hair and still going strong after the project, becoming a bit of a famous fella around the world. So naturally I jumped at the invite to Aaron's 90th birthday party, extended by my cheeky elderly admirer and his wider family.




In the aftermath of the riots I remained great friends with Aaron and visited with him regularly. I wrote about his story for Blurb's Nation of Storytellers competition, and we won, being featured in the 20 chosen stories for the published book, which can be bought here.&#38;nbsp;*POSTSCRIPT*Aaron passed away in late November 2013, still working in the shop until about a month before he fell ill (at almost 92 years of age). We became very close over the years, and in my grief and out of respect, I created a memorial website of his little shop that the good people of the internet had helped to refurbish, to allow them to leave their thoughts, mark the loss of a legendary man and keep him cutting forever. *RIP Mr Biber.*

// MOTHER OF ALL MEET UPS
I started the Amsterdam chapter of a network for working mothers in creative industries. I designed the logo, kickstarted the first few events and I run the social feed. Sadly as a one-woman show it’s become quite irregular, perhaps a testament to modern working motherhood... But I enjoy the sisterhood camaraderie, and am inspired by the challenge to pick up the pace on it again someday and perhaps turn it into a proper events series! So if any working mamas out there are doing it brilliantly 9-5 (I know you are!) and fancy helping out, then hit me up.

The great thing about Mareka is that she cares deeply about everything she does.
